Default I need to know the difference

I am still kind of new to this

I would like to know the difference between Synthesizer // Keyboard // and MIDI Controller or just MIDI

Which one is better to use with Reason 4 for Trance/Techno/Happy Hardcore type of music?

And any reccomendations on which brand/model would work best for a beginner ?

Reason uses midi data to trigger it's Sounds/samples/virtual synths. And to do that you basically need a midi controller, some can be expensive, some can be cheap.

Here's some keyboards I like:

The Axiom Series, you really cant go wrong with these keyboards (pads, sliders, and knobs):

The Novation Remote SL series, very nice controllers. Also has lots of knobs and sliders and such.

The Edirol PRC series, hear alot of good things about these keyboards too.

Looking for something more cheap?
The M audio keystation 49e is a very basic midi usb keyboard, but it can get the job done.

I just noticed I kinda gave you a cheap answer, so let me also answer your main question.

Synthesizer:
This is what dictionary.com says "any of various electronic, sometimes portable consoles or modules, usually computerized, for creating, modifying, and combining tones or reproducing the sounds of musical instruments by controlling voltage patterns, operated by means of keyboards, joysticks, sliders, or knobs."

Basically it's a piece of hardware that creates "sound", most have built in keys to trigger the sounds.

Keyboard:
I'm not sure what you mean by this, but you're probably referring to what many call "keyboard workstations". These keyboards usually have built in sound banks (samples/sound patches within the keyboard) and simple sequencers so you can structure your track. They usually have built in midi support too.

Midi Controller:
A midi controller is usually used to describe a midi keyboard, it basically sends midi data to whatever interface (pc, modules, etc) it's hooked up too. Now-a-days they also have silders, knobs, and buttons (as you can see in my post above) that can be assigned to whatever you like in your favorite music production program.

if you end up buying a midicontroller I'd suggest for you to buy something with more than just 25 keys. Also, the novation remote sl is one hell of a controller.

Sorry for the very very very late answer but I've been busy. So if you're still looking...

The Axiom is supported by Reason 4 with the update, so yes you can certainly use it, I love my axiom 25.

It's very easy to use for the most part, but you can also get real in depth with their "enigma" which allows you to basically customize every button and function in the axiom. I also like the semi weighted keys and endless rotary encoders, most say the pads on them are decent. I agree, they're pretty sensitive and will get the job done.

So I say it's a good choice, of course I might be a little bias.

If you want to spend less money, you can get the Oxygen 49 for around $130.00. It is a good little keyboard and works great with Reason.
