Default Reason v4 + Novation Remote SL-61

Hi all, my first post here.

I recently purchased Reason v4 and the Novation SL61 controller. I'm old-school in the sense that I am used to plugging my old keyboard or guitar or drum machine directly into my Soundblaster Platinum Elite sound card and recording directly to Adobe Audition. I have AA v 1.5 but the latest version 3.0 is due to be loaded soon.

However, when my keyboard started acting up on me, instead of paying for another repair I decided to research and purchase more modern tools and ended up with Reason and Novation. Little did I know how much different it is from what I was used to.

First, I truly believe that I have a tremendous music-making tool at my disposal and don't regret the purchase.

Second, I have no flipping idea what I am doing. hah!!!

heh... I am so used to plug-and-play, I'm somewhat at a loss. But little by little I am working my way through the issues. I'll use the forum search and try to not ask questions that have already been answered, but to jump start me let me ask a couple of noob questions:

Can I record sounds to Adobe Audition in wave format, one at a time, using Reason and the Novation controller?

Can anything I create in Reason be saved as a wave?

Thanks for your help!

p.s. links to tutorials of the basic functions would be very helpful.

Anything you make in Reason can be exported to high quality aif or wav audio, either the whole song or the looped bars.

Welcome to the wonderful world of reason.

Rewire takes the audio stream of reason and places it into an audio track in your DAW of choice. Any reason session file itself can be loaded into rewire, and yes you can directly hook up each device (or sound) to individual rewire tracks in your DAW of choice and directly record it. Although I don't know what the process is like in Audition.
Reason can also be exported independently, so anything you make and hear in reason can be exported as a wav.

Thanks for the responses! SG, did you edit your response? I thought I saw you said something about midi controllers and was going to respond to that but when I did, I see a different message! wow, am I hallucinating?

ok, is Rewire a separate proggy or is it included in Reason? Also, I didn't see a "save as .wav" option in Reason, so there must be another process to do so.

re the "midi" comment I thought I saw so the Novation can be considered a midi controller playing midi samples using Reason, correct? I need to shift my thinking from a hardware synth to a software controller.

Yes I did edit lol, because I thought you asked a different question at first. And your last sentence is exactly right, think it of as your midi controller triggering samples and synths through reason devices. Go to file then "Export song as audio file" to export your mix as an .wav file. Make sure your end (or "E") line is placed appropriately on the sequencer.

As for your rewire question, rewire isnt a separate program but rather a built in protocol within reason and many other DAWs. Im not sure how its done in audition. However I found this video tutorial, hope it helps.

Perfect. thanks!

Now, my Creative soundcard uses "mini-midi" inputs.. sheesh! I have a ton of regular midi cables, but none have male "mini" connections, I'm not having any luck locating any adapters, does anyone happen to know where these can be found?

another quick question -- sorry for being brutally stupid here -- since the Novation controller is connected to my PC via usb, is there any need at all to connect it to the sound card via midi? Will that provide better sound, lower latency or any advantage whatsoever?

Not sure about the mini midi, but there's no need to connect to your sound card if you're hooked up via usb. USB is the way to go. Also, when you set your sound in preferences, choose asio. Asio will give you the least amount of latency.

Yep, my Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum supports Asio.

thanks guys for all of your help. I'm out of town for a couple of days but when I return this weekend I'm going to get rolling on making some music! I'm sure I'll be calling on you once again.
