Default Midi OUT to USB connection - Keyboard to Computer

Hello folks,

I would greatly appreciate some help with getting my keyboard working with propellerheads Reason 3.0. I have a Medion 8383 computer and have a BASE MK 939S keyboard connected via the USB.

Before getting the keyboard, I used a virtual piano keyboard, that was played via the mouse or computer keyboard, called Bomes Keyboard, which was hooked through the virtual cable software called Maple.

I've got the BASE keyboard hooked up to the back USB ports of the Medion computer. On one end of the plug is two plugs, one saying MIDI IN and the other MIDI OUT. The other end of the plug is just a USB outlet. The MIDI OUT of the plug is pluged into the MIDI OUT of the Keyboard, as the MIDI IN is hanging loose as there is only one midi plug on the back of the keyboard.

Within propellerheads Reason, I've gone to preferrences>control surfaces and keyboards. Listed here were the bomes keyboard, and <other> MIDI control keyboard model. I've tried both as the master keyboard controller, but I get nothing. I get noise out of the keyboard speakers, but nothing out of reason (nothing out of my pc speakers).

I apologiese if I have overlooked something very obvious, but this stuff is new to me, and have just done this without a manual, as I bought the keyboard off ebay.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thankx

Mark

Well you need to install drivers for your keyboard first off.

Secondly, the MIDI OUT on your cable will probably go into the MIDI IN on your keyboard, and the MIDI IN will go into the MIDI OUT onto your keyboard... I think so anyway... I'm not that clear at the moment.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but why can't you just plug the keyboard's usb cable into the computer? If not, then just plug the midi out of the keyboard into the midi in of your soundcard or a midi interface such as Midisport. That's about the only options you have. If you don't get a "hit" on the "find target" then something is not reading right. If you're still not getting sound, then you will have to troubleshoot as to where the problem is.

Yeah. Also, Reason doesn't send MIDI data back to your device, you'll want to rewire to a DAW like Ableton Live for that.

You don't really need any of the cables apart from MIDI USB.

my apologies if I've missed something, but just noting, the keyboard has no USB. It only has a MIDI OUT. I was given a chord that has two MIDI plugs at one end (in and out), and a USB plug at the other.

My sound card has a number of plugs that look like the 3.5mm plugs they use to have on a CD Walkmen or cassette walkmen. There are six of them, all different colours, but I wouldn't think it would be one of these as these are all analog plugs.

This is why i've gone for the USB plugs.

The keyboard has no driver disc, and looking on the internet for this particular model yields absolutely no results. Even looking for a company by the name of BASE yeilds nothing.

I bought this for $50 on ebay, but when I got the package, it had a price tag of $199.00, so It doesn't seem to be a bad keyboard.

Before purchasing the keyboard, I was told by my instructors, that I just needed a keyboard with a midi out to work with reason, and my computer?

The only cable you need is midi out. Get a regular midi cable and go midi out of the keyboard into midi in on the computer. That's it. You don't need anything else.

have you used the auto-detect function in the preferences/keyboards window?

have you played with the various options for mid-in that window? You can also click "Find" and it will try to automatically set this for you.

have you checked the "Use with Reason" box next to the picture of the keyboard in that window?

it sounds like your cabling is correct to me...

oh...did you say that you had not installed drivers for this keyboard? without the drivers installed you are going nowhere. look carefully to find the manufacturer and model of your keyboard and do a google search for it. you will be able to download the drivers from the manufacturer's website

is this it?

good luck
