Default Reason v3/v4 Compatibility

Hi folks,

First off - I'm a new member and it's good to be part of this forum, I think it's going to be really useful and interesting!

My wife has bought me 4.0 for my 30th birthday and I've previously been using 3.0. Will my old projects from 3.0 still be playable/editable in 4.0? And also are the all the soundbanks in 3.0 in 4.0?

I'm hopefully buying a new PC tomorrow and I'm looking forward to giving v4 a good run through.

Thanks in advance for any help recieved,
Steve

Hey Steve,

Yes, your Reason 3 songs will work in Reason 4. The only thing is, your automation lanes may look a bit messy (you'll see what I mean) but it's no big hassle and easily fixed.

There used to be a line tool in V3, in V4 you just draw two points and it automatically draws a line between them. You get used to the change after a couple of hours, but your Reason 3 lanes will have points in every possible place when opened in R4 (it's hard to describe, but you'll find it out yourself).

For when you're getting your new computer, I have to recommend ASIO4ALL which will dramatically decrease any latency issues between your MIDI device (i.e. keyboard) and your computer. Right now I'm running at 13ms latency as opposed to 93ms, thanks to ASIO4ALL, which is fantastic.

Also, if there's something you're not quite sure what to do, always check out YouTube. There's some quality Reason tutorials up there.

Thanks for the reply. I can't wait to give it a go. I'm picking up a new PC tonight with a quad core processor and 3 gig ram - it's gonna be a massive leap from what I've used before!

Thanks for the ASIO tip - was reading about that last night and wondering what to do.

I ordered the CM special edition last night too to get me started. I was hoping to pick up a good Reason 4 book and having searched amazon noticed there are quite a few but no user reviews. Any ideas on whether they're any good?

Good to meet you all - I hope to be using this forum a lot as I get used to v4

I don't think there's really any need to get a book. I never used a book. If you just Google what you're trying to do or search YouTube in nearly all cases you'll get it, otherwise post here.

Still, you might to want to read all about Reason and how it works. If so, then I guess you should go for the book. There used to be a really good pdf up on the net. If I can find it I'll give you a link.

Cheers that would be great. I've used reason3 for a while now but I know there are so many features I don't take advantage of and need to learn about. I think some tips on using it creatively would be useful too such as some inventive patching!

Well a lot of it is learned through experimentation. No two people's racks will look the same.

I thought I had posted with these links but I guess I hadn't. I couldn't find that pdf I was talking about, I guess that you have to pay for it now.

These sites look great, although I have a feeling they may already cover stuff that you know.

Also, at some stage Moltar, the forum administrator, is going to upload tutorials onto a subdomain or another site, once he gets a respectable amount of tutorials.
