Unhappy RE: Bass guitar EQing

Hi,

This may be a bit simple in terms of everyone on here but im a MAJOR beginner on reason. I want to know how you can EQ a bass guitar( whether it be Combinator, NNXT or NN19) so that it sounds like a real live bass??........i've tried combinator patches but they still sound muddy! or just WRONG.......anyone got any Refills that contain a real like bass sound?

Either use loops, or engineer it right. Try running it through a compressor and maximizer, experiment with the EQ too.

Well, it really depends on what bass sound you're looking for. What style and what genre. For authentic sounding bass, try the "finger bass" in nn-xt or other units. Once you've done this, open up an eq and add some lows, say 60 hz. Then fool with the "Q" a little. Then add some eq around 200hz and so on. Depending once again on the mix, you may need some mids as well.

If you're gonna have a kick drum in the mix, then you might want to make room for it so that the bass and kick arn't totally sharing the same space. Overlapping is fine, but each voice needs some space to come out in the mix. Also as Cow mentioned, you can add some compression as needed.

I recommend you read up on EQ a bit. It can be very confusing and you can really fuck things up if you don't know what you are doing, but if you do, it can be an easy way to add "reality" to your instruments, make space for everything to breathe, and polish off the overall mix. Just google eq-related terms (ie -- eq, instruments, etc.) and read up. There are lots of pages that tell you basics on how to use eq and key values to acheive the sound you want (ie -- add "fatness" to bass, "sparkle" to keys, "slap" to drums, etc.). I found this to be extremely valuable!

The real bummer is that anything you program in reason is never going to sound like a real bass guitar played by a real human being. Get a human being who can play bass. Then, export your song as audio and import it into a program that has audio recording capabilities and record a bass over it, cut it to start on the 1, and import the bass audio file into a sampler in reason. If you want to try and help a fake bass out with some EQ in reason I would recommend busting out the PEQ-2 on it. Boost any frequency 6 or so db and start moving it around the frequency range until you find the area that is causing trouble for you and then cut it a few db, and see if it helps. You could use the other band as well to take out another problem frequency range.

I guess the best way to start is by choosing the very best bass sound from ur library and then listening to how the drums and bass blend together.
