| I have a couple questions...easy ones. 1) How long did it take you to create a song that you actually liked when you started out at the very beginning of making mixes? 2) Is Moltar the man around here? He seems to be the answer man from what I have seen....lol....these answers are very helpful- THANX. I will probably have more relevant questions in the future... clueless, stargazer |

1) It took me about a year, but it all depends on your background. If you have any musical knowledge or have ever played around with making music... I had no musical knowledge (and still don't), but I've been playing with music since I remember myself. But nothing like Reason. 2) I am the owner of the forum, yes. There are just aren't many people here yet, so I am helping out as much as I can. |

I see. I AM HERE NOW- haHA . well your help is much appreciated. I am going to be messing around with reason for a little while. I am going to start out with some trance-type stuff- that is rumored to be easy, but I like it whether it is easy or not. And none of it is really easy to me right now. I have talked to some people about it....one person I know who makes music has told me that the celestial, airy, "cosmic" kind of sounds can only be created with "vsp" - something that is part of Ableton but not Reason....unless a keyboard is hooked up to the computer. Do you know anything about this? |

I started off with house/trance as well. Now producing some drum & bass and sometimes hip hop. As for the trancy sounds. The person was referring to VST plugins. Reason does not (and will not) support VSTs. But don't listen to people saying that you can't do this and that with Reason. It's complete BS. Reason can do everything, except recording audio. You just have to know how do it. Of course, those people that use VSTs, just plug it in, select a preset and off they go. It's just easy, but at the same time it's not interesting. You might as well use Acid and bunch of wav loops. Basically it comes down to preference. I prefer Reason, and I don't want anything else. I've heard awesome and different stuff produced in Reason and I am 100% convinced that everything is possible in Reason. |

I see...well that is a comfort in that I do not want to have to learn 20 different programs just to turn out something that I like. that would be very annoying. I have created some stuff that sounds kinda good. when I figure out how to upload it to the internet, I'll post it here. |

As Moltar said, it depends on your bg. I've been working in studios for a few years, once I got reason, well not I only use reason. Took me about a good week to get used to reason and then I was making everything just as i wanted, check out my latest thread called orchestral rythms, one of my latest reason tracks. -Arik |

I have been working on it for about a week now and am making some progress. I can make different parts of the song that I absolutely love, but putting them together is quite different. I am still finding it very difficult to do build-ups and breakdowns. I am working on it... |

Try making different parts, but don't think so much about the order or anything. Play some things, use different sound, and since reason is midi you can always change your proformance instrument after recording. So if it doesn't sound right to you later, change your device. Try editing some of the sounds yourself as well. If you use the combinator it will help you see how Arpegio's are done and how you can go about wiring the devices. It's all a learning experience at first. When I first started reason, I watched the tutorial from propellerhead on the site under demo. It sure got me going, but I just didn't know how to go about putting a song together, you'll get it. Just keep at it. -Arik |

I see. Thanks for the advice. I am still figuring how to play with the sounds to change them around. I'm all over the map right now. Sometimes I come up with stuff that sounds pretty cool...but it can be frustrating. I have a tutorial that I refer back to....which...similarly...got me started but some of the stuff is still elusive. I have some songs I like, though. Not doing as much Trance as I thought I would...I am going to hunt the forum for some (more) tracks to be inspired by. I'd like to hear some of your all's stuff if you're open to that. At any point in time. I have a friend who has appeared to become rather successful in breaks music who started on Reason. He works for the station Breaks FM and now works with people in London making breaks mixes. I like the sound of the stuff, but am not sure that I'd really want to invest that much $$ in using other people's stuff purely...I dunno. Mixing breaks, he claims, is much easier. But I like the idea of making my own stuff. |
