Default Changing Key Mapping in reason.... Midi controllers etc.

I know how to change the ability to control certain functions by pushing certain buttons in reason...but man won't that get old.

My specific problem is this. I have a Dr:Rex open and it is rewired to reason..but every time I push stop on my Tascam 1082, it changes the octave of the Dr:Rex. I could go in right now and make the stop key do something different (we at least I think I can) but what about every other Reason Instrument...or every other time I open a project.

How have you all dealt with this issue, cause I know I am not the first to come across it.

Have you gone into the 1082 control panel and assigned midi outputs for each 1082 function in the midi control mode? This takes some time, but it solves a lot of quirks. Is the stop button assigned to all four midi outs? I use just the v1 midi out exclusively to control reason. If the stop button sends midi out on all four midi out channels, that might cause a conflict. One thing I did was create a template for the 1082 within reason. Each new project starts with this tempelate and all the functions that I want the 1082 to control are already assigned. (faders, stop, start etc) You might have already done this, but I didn't learn for a while and I would re-assign the control surface functions everytime.

thanks for the response!!! how to you make the template thing in reason for the 1082 and how do you make only (i assume that you are talking about) the "vitual out 1" port to just control reason...how did you do that?

Press the "control panel" button on the 1082. Go into "midi edit mode" by pressing the shift+midi buttons. Press which 1082 button you want to edit. The midi conrol screen should the display a description of what button you pushed. (fader 1, sel, play etc) there will also be a box that displays which midi outs the 1082 fader/button is sending data through. Make sure that only V1 is checked. My 1082 had all the boxes checked as a default. When I first used my 1082 with Reason, I assigned all of the midi buttons in banks 1 and 2 to the V1 output. So far that is enough Midi control for what I need. This makes the 1082 control reason through the virtual 1 output only. There is some stuff you have to do in the Reason control surfaces menu to allow your 1082 to control all the reason faders. I am at work and will verify when I get home the control surface setup I have. If this points you in the right direction let me know and i will respond in more detail.

Have you right-clicked a midi controllable knob in reason and got your 1082 to control it? If not, I can help with that. Assigning all the buttons to the V1 output was the first step for me. The tempelate I was mentioning is just your default reason song that has all of those Midi assignable faders and knobs in Reason connected to the faders and buttons on the 1082. That way when you load Reason, all of your faders, solo, etc are automatically connected to the 1082 and you don't have to keep assigning them each time you open reason. You can have Bank 1 control your faders and bank 2 control a device. I think you need t put banks 3 and 4 on the V2 outputs, but I haven't really explored that because I don't need that many control options.
My midi keyboard goes directly into my PC and not through the 1082. That might make things more simple on my setup.
Hope this helps. I have finally gotten my 1082 to control reason exactly as I want. Just play around with the Midi Control mode and the Reason control surface menu. Trial and error was my number one tool.

The reason I thought this might by your problem is if the stop button is connected to all four midi outputs, it might send midi data to your other control surface which is controlling your DR Rex. Try the midi edit thing on the stop button first before changing any other 1082 midi settings. if this is your problem, you should also be able to isolate the stop button to change the octave on your rex and not function as the reason stop control by changing 1082 midi outputs. I could also be way off.
