Default How to best EQ a track?

I want to burn a copy of my House track to CD for radio play but the eq'ing doesn't sound anything like other tracks when i play it through my hi-fi/mixer/car stereo etc. either the bass is too low or the treble ends up to high...how is eq best done.

Is it best to route my computer to an outboard mixer & then back into a CD recorder so i can eq of an external mixer, or just eq in reason from my computer & burn a copy.

generally you would eq each instrument or track individually and once those are set you could do an overall eq on the main.

that's assuming your using a decent set of monitors, or it's a bit of a hit and miss affair.

And even with decent monitors you need to have the skills to do this. You cannot expect to have a pro quality after just tinkering with it for a few hours. After you EQ a few tracks you'll start to get a hang of it.

One thing you could try is. Re-mix/re-eq your track and save it as a different name (just put a number after your original track name). Do this a few times, each time making sure you have "fresh" ears before starting. Maybe do one a day for a week. Then listen to them all side by side and on different systems and in different orders. Maybe putting on the radio or a similar CD every now and again to compare. You could also do a blind test and put your cd player on random so you have no pre-conceptions.

Because your not saving over your original work you can go a bit overboard and do things you usually wouldn't.
