Yup you can have as many MIDI devices as you can connect to my knowledge. And yes, specific controllers can be assigned to certain instruments/controls.

This is no problem. First set up all controllers in the preferences page "controll surfaces and keyboards" (this dialog is self-explained, i think). After this, right click on a device and select "lock DeviceXYZ to ControllerXYZ". Thatīs all.

I have had trouble in the past with Reason on Windows not supporting multiple MIDI deices (I have an M-Audio Keystation and a Trigger Finger). It simply wouldn't recognize both. I just bought a MacBook Pro, and Reason seems to identify them both pretty easily. Just my experience (which isn't worth a whole lot!). |

I just tested this out on my Mac laptop. I got both my Keystation and Trigger Finger set up in the control surfaces (in which I had to use "generic midi" settings), and they both played a SubTractor and ReDrum just fine. I then right-clicked ReDrum to assign it to my Trigger Finger ("MIDI Controller 2"). My Keyboard would play Subtractor, but my Trigger Finger wouldn't play ReDrum. Even after I changed the track settings to have ReDrum as the active channel in the track editing window, the Trigger Finger wouldn't play ReDrum. Once I de-selected my Trigger Finger to be assignged, it would play again, but only when it was not assigned to anything. My next step to troubleshooting was to remove my Keystation from being the master keyboard, so that I could independently lock my MIDI controllers to two different devices. Now neither the Keystation or the Trigger Finger could produce any sound from their respective linked devices. Is there another step involved in playing two devices simultaneously? **Edit: I'm using Reason 3.0** Last edited by digitalvudu; February 21st, 2008 at 18:32. |

Thanks for the advice iGoa. I have tried this method and got the same results as digitalvudu. When I lock a device to a controller, i no longer am able to play the device. Is there a step i am missing? Thanks again!

Oh, sorry. I believe, your situation is different, because you habe 2 devices to play notes. In my case i have just 1 keyboard and 1 controller-box (which doesnīt play notes, but sends controller values). I really didnīt expect, that 2 keyboards would be a problem in Reason. Sorry.

Ok, after a little more research and trial and error I was able to figure it out! If you have two MIDI controllers setup at the same time you must assign them to different MIDI Buses. So I assigned my Roland FANTOM to BUS A and my Radium-61 to BUS B. I then was able to lock the controllers to their own separate devices. It worked great! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Alright, after reading through all these posts, and other internet sources, I'm still not getting mine to work. I'm using Reason 4, I'm trying to use 2 keyboards. I've tried every combination of settings I can think of and nothing works. Setting each input to a separate bus, nothing. Locking a surface to a device, nothing. Setting a keyboard as master, and locking the other device, obviously the master can play all devices, and the locked device plays nothing. There's gotta be a step in here I'm missing, anyone know it?
