Question suddenly clicks and pops?

Hi All , I bought a laptop ages ago with some music apps installed. i really liked Reason 3 so have been considering buying/upgrading to version 4 , but after not using Reason for a while , I've suddenly started having problems.

I've posted this question on a few forums and STILL cant work out what the problem is ..... Before anyone suggests altering sample rates or increasing buffer size etc , I've already tried all the obvious solutions, and even downloaded the latest Rex runtime app but it's got me stumped because this problem occurs on samples /rex's /tracks that used to work perfectly well before.
Anyway , here's the post I've put up on other forums ...If anyone has any suggestions then it'd be MUCH appreciated
Thanks in advance :-

"Ok so I havent played with Reason for a while , so I decided to have a run through some of my old Reason tunes earlier and nearly all of the Rex files and nearly all of the Redrum presets suddenly are producing horrible clicks and pops . The Redrum samples have to have their lengths shortened so much that they become almost unusable , and I cant seem to work out why the REX files that USED TO PLAY PERFECTLY WELL are suddenly clicking and popping ...
All of these problems are appearing on tunes I made ages ago and they all used to play perfectly well with none of these clicks etc.. ANY IDEAS????
Im still using the same version ( Reason 3 build 514) on the same machine....nothings changed.
Its not a latency problem either , and the clicks etc still happen even with exremely low CPU usage.
I've been considering upgrading to Reason 4 and thats why I decided to play around with Reason 3 again after not using it for some time , but I am stumped as to why these clicks and pops are suddenly occuring when it used to be fine previously.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

Hi,

Do the samples play to there full length in the browser window?

Sounds like some sort of global envelop problem for which the sustain and release are too short. Of the top of my head I don't know but i'll have a wee look tonight.

Hi NuttsDutts ,
Yes , if I open Reason and browse through the samples individually, they play but the clicks are still there. Same thing happens when I audition thr Rex files from within the Reason browser , they play till the end , but I get clicks on various slices.
I noticed a very strange thing today.... I had opened a Rex file in a Dr.Rex player yesterday ( one of the DUB Rex's from the Reason soundbank) and using the "ALT" key on windows , I auditioned each individual slice from withinthe Dr Rex player itself. I shortened the decay lenghths on the offending slices , which made the loop pretty useless but DID remove the clicks from those particular slices. ....Now i just opened the same song , and now Im getting clicks on DIFFERENT slices from the same loop?????

I've triedopening the same Rex file into an NN-XT sampler. The clicks are still there , so I took the time to go through each individual slice in the NN-XT and shorten their length till the click dissapeared. I then SAVED this patch as a new patch , but when I reload it , the clicks are back !!!!!!!!!

Same thing seems to happen on the Redrum , I open a Drumkit , for example "Dub Kit 1 " and the first snare has clicks at the end , along with the hi-hat / open hi-hat and Cymbal. So I have to put these into GATE mode and shorten them to such an extent that they become almost unusable. But when I re-open the song , it doesn't seem to save the Redrum settings and the clicks are back.
Thanks for replying , but this has me so confused. I dont have any problems with samples etc in Ableton or FLStudio , just in Reason. And as I originally said , this never used to happen. I have Reason songs that used to play fine , but now are unplayable because of these horrible artifacts in the sound.
Thanks again
Maz

Sounds like you have a bit of a problem. I had a look last night and coudn't find any global envolopes, so I really can't help you. Could be a problem with your sound card/hardware settings but i'm clutching a straws.

Have you tried posting on the propellerhead website or reasonstation.

Well thats it .. Im officially STUMPED !!!!
After asking around on various forums and trying everything from re-installing reason to swapping round/checking memory sticks , doing virus scans etc aswell as all the OBVIOUS solutions like altering latency , trying ASIO / mme /direct wave drivers and just about everything else (even blowing all the dust from inside my computer..really) .
Last night I made a few samples , and then a few Rex files in recycle , I started Reason up and began a new song...NO POPS OR CLICKS etc in the samples or the Rex's ....then , this evening I opened up the same song , and they're back !!!!! I really cant get my head around this ...why would a song that played fine yesterday suddenly develop these problems on re-opening?????
Im at the point where , if someone cant find a solution , Im gonna bin my computer and take up the kazoo.
BOO

Uhh well it could not have to do with Reason at all, might be your soundcard itself. Unless it only happens within reason, and not any other sound module/DAW that would put high amounts of stress on your soundcard. Just a thought though.

cymazic,
I'm having the exact same problem in reason 4 on my macbook pro. Did you ever sort it out? It's driving me nuts.
Thanks!
