| I've been DJing for about 4 months now and I'm just starting to get into producing. I have a high-end performance laptop and just recently purchased Reason 4.0. The only problem is that I dont have a keyboard or any sort of MIDI controller outside of my laptops QWERTY Keyboard. I'm looking to buy a keyboard or a midi-controller, but know virtually nothing about them except for a few good brand names. Could someone shed some light on what I should look into buying? Should I be buying a keyboard w/ midi capability or should I be buying a midi-controller? Whats the differences between the two? (I'll be producing electronic music mostly Trance/Minimalist type) My budget is around $400 - $500. Thanks a lot! |

I would recommend the combination: A MIDI-keyboard with extra controls. Like these ones: http://www.thomann.de/de/novation_remote25_sl.htm http://www.thomann.de/de/edirol_pcr800_mit_netzteil.htm http://www.thomann.de/de/evolution_m...erkeyboard.htm |

Check out in a store the Novation Remote SL series. Its a phantastic tool to control all devices from R4. The latest OS from this can control "thor". I use here a Remote 37 SL for the synths and a behringer BCR2000 for the main mixer in a project. Greeting TinyVince |

I thought I had replied. Okay, a keyboard is simply a keyboard. It records notes, end of story. A controller surface is used for automating knobs/buttons/sliders in Reason, you assing it to a control, e.g. filter res, and when you move a physical sontrol, the respective control in your Reason Rack is automated. A midi keyboard w/ controls is a two-in-one, and is really good. It will last for a very long time and will be all the hardware you'll need. miditech.de is a good economic brand, so is behringer. Also, check out this site: thomann.de

right Check out simple 61 Key-Keyboard and the remote zero. Maybe is this setup under 500 dollars. But the better way is a remote 61 SL . You can just by one cklick on the track in R4 the notes and the controller together. I mean nothing other one its a better as this. The remote series use a AUTOMAP System !!! It shows many datas in two displays and thats great. Lock at the side from novation and the automap story !!! TinyVince |

I've got a Korg MicroKontrol, because it was cheap, robust and had all the features I needed. Wish i'd spent a bit more nad bought the full size one but i would recommend it. I can't imagine not having a keyboard, my work flow and creativity would be out the window. |
