Hey People,

I would like to know if you want to make a Beat, do you first do the drums or the Melody? Just for fun. Because I like to do Drums first and would like to know how you do.
Another Question is, if you make a Beat, do you pick all of your instruments first or do you just do 1 and look what maybe can match? Becaus I got a Problem with finding matching instruments. I do the drums and for example a Synthesizer and then i just dont know what to pick next. I know its my Problem but i just want to know how you work. In which order you do what....

I usually make a melody first, make some possible alterations, and group them, then make a drum kit in redrum, then make other instruments that match the melody.

Right now I'm making a song similar to the "Green EP" by Aphex Twin, which uses a lot of basic synth and big drums.

If you can't find something to match your first instrument, you probably need new patches. You can find all of the patches you'll need for a good while here.

If it's a rex loop I'm starting out with, I'll add to it with the drums. I guess I usually start with drums, then I go into melodies, unless I stumble upon a melody I like, then I'll start with that.

Most of the time i'll find a REX loop I like the sound of and think I could manipulate. Set the tempo, get stoned, grab a beer press record and play my keyboard.

Then go back and listen to it and pick out the best bits - if there are any. Fix them up, get them looping nicley and then do some layering/production on the track before I choose the next instrument.
