I've just re-read your post. It's completely normal for your sound to distort whenever you're turning it up through a mixer or other volume control surface. Keeping all VU controls to 100 will standardize volume levels. If it's still quiet then it's probably just your speakers turned down. Like I said, it worked fine for me. Reason just distorts the sound whenever you crack VU up like that... If you want to increase volume still, a maximizer can do the job without distorting anything. Just hook one up to the back of a mixer or device (or channel) and adjust the volume controls as you please.
