Default Help using Midi Keyboards

Can someone please tell me how I can play notes on an external midi controller so that they appear in the sequencer.

Thx

First make sure all drivers for your midi keyboard are installed. Then go to edit>Preferences>then In "Page"'s drop down box go to Control surfaces and keyboards. From there make sure your keyboard is on and pick Auto-Detect Surfaces. If it doesn't detect your keyboard try going to "Add" then in Manufacturer pick "Other" and in model pick the closest it is to your actual keyboard, and in midi inputs search to see if yours come up. That should cover the initial setup if you have more problems after this feel free to ask.

Yeah I can get the keyboard to work, its getting the notes that I play to appear in the sequencer automatically that I'm having the problems with.

Thanks

I think I get you now.

You have to hit the red record button and then play whatever melody it is you want. Then you go into arrange mode, change the piano roll to 1/64 turn off the magnet tool, and zoom in. Move the notes so that the are perfectly on time (there is usually a delay with a keyboard unless it's a very good one).

When you've finished doing that, you can go into "edit" mode and then make some changes in that, such as modulation automation, pitch bend etc. . Then you can change the piano roll back to 1/4 and then put the magnet tool back on and group the notes that you want to repeat. You should see a transparant (probably green) box with some notes inside it. To repeat the notes inside it like a REX loop, highlight it and just copy and paste to wherever it is that you want to repeat it.

But pretty much, all you have to do is hit the record button, then play, and then play whatever it is you want to record. It will at whatever point you recorded it on. But you really do have to edit it to make it good enough for a proper song.

I actually made a song to illustrate the importance of being exactly on time. Otherwise it just sounds wrong. Except, of course, when deliberately doing it as I illustrate at the end.
