Default Staccato in manual note input "Song>edit mode"

So, I'm new here, but, not to forums. Anyways, I looked on this forum for any related posts and the search came up with none. Anyways, I'm wondering if there's an easy way to get a staccato note (played very short and sharp) into the Song>Edit Mode layout, without needing to use 8th notes spaced out instead of quarter notes. Can anyone help me please?

What's wrong with using 8th notes? Besides, you could always enter them as quarter notes, and then use the Tool Window to convert them to eighths.

The only other way would be to make the entire instrument staccato; that would involve fiddling with its amplitude envelope (attack = 0, sustain = 0, and decay = some small value), but then you wouldn't be able to play long notes.

Damn, I guess I'll have to 25% the BPM and just play it by hand. :P I like playing by hand for chords, but, I have somewhat Bach-like melodies. They get pretty complicated...

Is it not possible to input the notes (on 8ths as default) then shorten the notes in the edit mode?

I'm not on my DAW computer until later, but try inputting the notes as usual, then selecting all notes in the edit mode, take the tail end of just one (with all selected) and drag the tail to shorten it, making sure that quantise is set to a short enough value...

Or maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree and misunderstood the question, well it is one in the morning where I am..

No worries, got it perfectly. Once I get my tenth post (cough, newb, cough) I'll post up a sample of what I was sorta trying to figure out with that question, which was indeed well answered by both of you. Also, perhaps I can even get tips, (well, if you guys actually like chillstep, that is.)
