Default Advice On Layer Kick Drum and Sub-Bass

Hi Again,

Being new to reason I am struggling with a concept, Essentially I want to know how I can take a kick drum sound and layer it with a sub-bass sound. I want to be able to play the patch up and down the scale (so bass has scare/range) but the kick does not change it's pitch (remain the same sound on each bass note).

Thanks any advice is appreciated for this reason newbie.

Hi there.

This should be easily achieved.

To start you off, basically, you need a seperate track for your kick and your sub instrument, this way your kick isn't affected by the notes your sub is playing.

Once you have created your mixer, create a Re-Drum unit. On this unit, choose a suitable bass drum for your kick sound, and input the kick on the steps you want it to play (don't forget to turn the 'run' button on for playback).

Then create a subtractor on channel 2. On this, choose a 'sinewave' (it looks like a wavy line, instaid of a saw or square), and then drop it an octave or two - this is your basic sub bass.

You'll then find that while your re-drum is playing it's constant kick drum, you are free to play a sub-bass line without it affecting the kick in the sequencer.

Once you have played around with the idea, come back to us for more advanced tricks - most tracks use 'bass ducking' with a kick/sub combo, but that's your next lesson

Hi and thanks for your quick reply to my posts.

The thing is I want to have this kick / bass sound as a single patch or sound that I can trigger with my midi keyboard or padkontroller. Essentially being able to record it on one single track / channel if this makes any sense.

Well, unfortunately I can't test this theory for you at the moment being I'm not at home in my studio...but you should be able to accomplish this with a Combinator. Basically take all that Lem said, and combine....the trick is to spread the kick out over all notes that you think you will play....if that makes sense. I will try this later when I get some time in the studio and give you a more specific explanation, unless someone else chimes in before then...

Yes, here's a Combinator patch I threw together that basically combines what Lemniscate and Dose have said.

It's a Combinator with two layers:
- a NN19 with a kick sample and Keyboard Tracking disabled (so it doesn't change pitch)
- a Subtractor with a deep bass patch (use a factory preset or make your own)

...add EQs and compressors to your liking.

crap....a quick thought....not sure that will work being that Redrum is "locked" in to its midi sends...so channels 1-10 are C1, C2, etc. The higher up the keyboard you go, the keys will start triggering the Redrum mutes, solos, etc.......

So, my next recommendation is to replace the Redrum with a Thor. In the factory sound bank--->Thor---->Percussion (I think)--->Bass (or Kick) Drum. Here you will find some kicks that might work, and this way you can combine this with the Subtractor and play them simultaneously that way. It sounds to me that an 808 kick is what you are looking for anyway, and the Thor 808 kick is rather good. This would eliminate your need for the attack of a standard kick and the sub bass from the Subtractor....just a thought, good luck!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for the patch as it allows me to learn how to use the combinator more effectively!

Thanks for the help and sharing the skills!
