Default The two midi keyboards matter

Hello everybody.

Do you know if it's possible to connect two midi keyboards to Reason assigning them two different Reason instruments? Otherwise I have to use two different laptops and managing it would be much more complicated in case of live shows.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Max

Thumbs up

Hello there,

Yes, I'ts definately possible to link up two midi controllers to reason, and have them play individual instruments. In fact you can link up about four to play notes, and more on top of that if you just want to control surfaces.

I'm going off the top of my head right at the moment so my advice not be an exact step by step tutorial, but should be more than enough to point you in the right direction.

If you haven't already done so, you need to set up both of your midi keyboards up in reason:

Preferences page --> "controll surfaces and keyboards". Use the "automatically detect input" for the easiest set up - press a key on each keyboard, and reason should detect it.

You will then need to assign each keyboard to a separate bus, (A, B, C or D), go to your rack window, expand the top rack that shows your Hardware Devices, and click on Advanced Midi Device.

Now it should be fairly easy for you to select which device(s) you want your individual keyboards to control - do this by choosing which Bus you want to change settings for, and you then have access not only to which device plays per controller, but also you can set different channels to different devices from within the same controller.

If going for the live set up, I'd recommend setting things up how you like them, and then saving your .rns so you can retrieve them later. You could even have multiple set ups, and save each one seperatey - that way it will only take seconds to set up your next song if you are using different intruments for your next songs, rather than loading your patches individually.

I hope this helps. Good like with your live performances!

Need anything else then give us a shout.

Awesome, and yes...please let us know. The way Lem described is the best, and to my knowledge the only way to achieve this. Good Luck!!
