been using Reason for a couple of years now, started off as a kid using basic multi-tracking- recording between two cassette records and overdubbing each time, until the finished tune is about 6 generations old and is just basically a load of fuzz!

i was combining live instruments with a backing track of pure midi cheese from cakewalk, but then i moved on to a version of cakewalk that would allow audio (2 channels i think, woohoo!) and moved into doing sample based stuff. after that i progressed to fruity loops (snap!) and when i needed to switch to a mac (for graphic design) my reason travels began!

That's quite a history! I myself started doing some silly remixes from tapes. I was recording from tapes into wavs and then layering them with other beats that I got off other songs. Then I got one of those track wizards called Dance Machine, played with that for a year and then fruity and then Reason

How's Reason on the Mac? Is it better than PC version in terms of sound quality and speed? What's your setup is like?

i've never tried it on the PC but i imagine its probably pretty much the same. Speed and sound quality is basically down to your individual computer spec i think, regardless of PC vs Mac; I got a 2 year old eMac G4 with a gig RAM and the standard soundcard. apart from that i just use a basic M-Audio keyboard controller and a bunch of dilapidated other stuff, crappy decks, guitar amps, instruments, mics etc.

recently actually it's been slowing down a bit and having trouble playing tunes- i'm not sure if this is down to filling up my harddrive with crap, or whether my tunes are become more complicated and a burden on the cpu, lots of fx instances etc.

has anyone else encountered problems with cpu usage like this? i've seemed to notice the using the advanced reverb seems to affect it a fair bit.

Reason 3 became a lot heavier than the older versions. Though with the 3.0.3update it seems a bit faster, but still really slower than older ones. I expect the software to become a bit slower with future versions, but switch from 2 to 3 was a big hit on my system.

As for the complexity of the tunes, I notice the change after maybe 50-70 devices added. Before that it's all pretty much the same (~ 20% CPU usage). I have a 3 year old AMD Ahtlon @ 1.73 Ghz with 512 of RAM and SB Live. It still runs ok though.
