the best thing you can do is use a midi controller, that's the fastest way to record your ideas. when you talk about pen tool —pencil tool—, well, just make as much as clicks you need to do across the lines in the secuencer view. ¿do you see a piano keyboad in the left side, before the devices lines of your sequencer window? if not, press ?+e (Mac) or, ctrl+e (Windows i guess) to see it in this way. Or if you want, make with the line or pencil tool the necessary changes on automations, velocities, etc You activate your instruments pressing the pair of buttons on the extreme left side in the sequencer window. The first one seems a little piano, this represents that your external midi device is focusing in a determinate instrument in Reason —how ever you most check what channel you specified for each instrument if case— and the second one, a little record button most be activated if you wanto to make some changes in that selected track.
