Default Soundcard?

I want to buy a real soundcard, but what kind should I buy? Although, I work as a computer programmer I really don't know squat about hardware. I want it to be compatible with Reason foremost but also other programs like cubase and protools should I some day go and buy those. Also, I don't want a totally professional one that costs me an arm and a leg. It should be within reason [pun intended].

What kind of soundcards do people use? Can you recommend any?

k, I found this little guide:

http://www.tweakheadz.com/soundcards...ome_studio.htm

My problem is I just don't know enough about all those 3-letter abbreviations. I just want to get in there and fiddle with the knobs.

Maybre I'm actually asking the wrong question here. Maybe I should ask: Where to start? What to buy if I want to end up with an acceptable home studio?

Regards,
Søren

a EMU 1212M should be perfect ... low latency ! (and full ASIO 2.0)

(Do own it myself ... ) , works great ! !

And off course ... the price is "to do" ...

I would suggest a USB or Firewire interface.
Btw, they work with notebooks, too.

I'm using this one:
