Thumbs up New to REASON...please help.

Hi all,

I just started exploring home recording with REASON 4.0.1...installed in my laptop(O.S.-Windows Vista Home basic). I do not have any audio interface right now. So after installation in the preferences I selected ASIO DirectX Full Duplex Driver(which has 46ms output latency). I am facing a strange kind of problem when I am playing with the REDRUM computer. At the time of playing a pattern it sometimes it is getting stopped for a while or missing a bit. I don't know why. Is it a audio card driver problem or anything else ?

Is it really necessary to have an audio interface to play with all recording software or I can go with this for the time being (I mean just for learning)?

I also went through the manuals came with REASON. Right from the beginning they have explained all the steps with reference to a MIDI/master keyboard. I do not have any midi or master keyboard. I want to record the drums pattern I am creating in the redrum computer. How Can i do that without having any midi keyboard ? Is it possible ? Please help.

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

What do you mean "record"? You do not need a keyboard for making a track if that's what you mean. There is more than one way to put a REDRUM pattern into the sequencer window. The simplest is probably using the pattern lanes. Another is the "Copy pattern to track" option on the right-click context menu for the REDRUM computer. This will copy the active pattern from the REDRUM into the area defined by the LEFT and RIGHT indicators in the sequencer window.

I've never used any MIDI instrument at all. You can find some tutorials on youtube if you haven't already looked. Try searching youtube for "reason tutorial redrum".

Regards,
Søren

You should be able to plat it with out a sound card. It wont sound the best might get some clipping if you have alot of sounds playing all at once but it should work. Im using mine on a lap top for time being and my sound is nothing special but it does work.

Talking Thank you...

Thank you sbrothyandosc2...

yes I am having a problem with the clipping sound...if I want to play a fast pattern in redrum(i mean in tempo over 120 bpm) it's often getting clipped...but sometimes I found it in tempo at 60 bpm also...but that's rare...and by the term recording I meant that...I want to record my flute with drums...I have a microphone which is not so sophisticated but works...I can connect it to my laptop through the line-in port...I am arranging the beats in redrum computer...and that are playing well(with clipping as well)...but I cannot see put the pattern in a waveform so that I can edit the drums sound(eq,level etc) after recording ans so for my flute also...but I can't do both...anyway I will look for the youtube tutorials...meantime if you guys have any other suggestions...please do not hesitate...I donno whether I made myself clear or not...

Many Many Thanks....

I don't know if this is the problem or not, but you might want to check the buffer size. From the audio window, select "control panel." You want the buffer size as low as possible without clipping or breaking up. You may have to raise it. It's worth a look.

You can't record audio with Reason. Reason is midi (data). For audio you need DAW (digital audio workstation) software. There's is a lot of DAW's out there, so google some and see what you are willing to pay. I think "Audacity" is free, but I've never used it.

Hi joe...please have a look at the attached picture...I have given the preferences menu...but after this also I am getting the clipping. Is it the memory management problem of the operating system or it is usual to get clippings without a sound card ?
