Default noise gate for vocoder?

Hey,

I'm using rebirth input to route my microphone into the Vocoder. the problem is, i get feedback noise from nearby speakers. I'm wondering if there is some noise gate in Reason to help me cut out noise from my rebirth input stream.

I don't use rebirth nor do I use vocoder, but in general recording, which I do know something about, you never use speakers when using a live mic. You need some headphones.

Yes, you NEVER use a microphone with speakers in the backround, even outside of music production.

So, what are thousands of MC's doing every day? What are rock bands doing every day when they play live in concert?

I just depends on the characterics of the microphone. Mics with "cardioid" and "hypercardioid" characterics are the best for live purposes. They pick up sound predominantly from one direction. So the sound from the sides (where the speakers are standing) will not be picked up so much. This helps avoiding feedbacks.

For live gigs there is no way around using mics with speakers. That's why dynamic mics are used as opposed to condenser mics in many cases because of their proximity effect. But in a recording studio, you never use an open mic with the speakers used as a monitoring source. If you do, you will get a looping effect and the end results will be less than desirable. Imagine doing a vocal track with the studio monitors on. You're gonna get the playback track onto the vocal track along with the vocal and playback track both being looped back into the recorded track, no matter what type mic you're using, large diaphragm, small diaphragm, cardioid, hypercardioid, dynamic, omni, tube and so on. It is just not done.

Didn't think of that, it's true.

@joe:
Yes, of course you're absolutly right with studio recording. I just guessed, that Lehel wanted to work live with his vocoder, because feeding live audio input into Reason doesn't make sense, when you're not in a live situation. (because Reason cannot record any audio)

Yes, right you are. I just assumed that he was trying to record.

no, i'm not recording. I'm just using the vocoder for live stuff. so, i'm wondering if there is a noise-gate available somewhere in the reason software that i can tweak the input before it goes into the vocoder.

You could build a noise gate by yourself in reason, but i doubt, this will help avoiding feedbacks (how should it be able to discern between feedbacks and consonant-"noises" of your voice?). I've tried many tricks in Reason to avoid feedback, but simply the best way is, to buy i better microphone. (in my special case, it was to just don't use vocals live, hehe!)

If you still want a noise gate, i could build a combinator patch.
