Default help please simple prob, vid included

Please look at this video and explain this annoying highlight feature, all i want to do is draw in the samples. How to I disable and what is the point of it?
Im not new to music but this program is hard.

what you're doing is drawing a group above an already existing group of notes, just use the select tool, double click on the notes that are already there, then you can edit them.

no, afraid not, that's just how it works really. you get used to it, and it's actually very useful.
