Thanks for that. I actually use Mac OS X, any idea if I can get this kind of thing to work on OS X or shall I just go and buy a MIDI keyboard? :-) Thanks. D |

Another question I have.. Basically I would like to hook up a MIDI keyboard to my Mac via Reason 4.0. I am going to buy an audio interface from M-Audio with MIDI support and also XLR for my mic, then USB the audio interface into my Mac. My overall aim is to record vocals and guitars and use the drum machine in Reason, but using a MIDI keyboard and not a step sequencer. Has anyone ever used an M-Audio Fast Track Pro with Reason 4.0? Is this all possible? Thanks. D |

Well reason should detect the interface and midi inputs just fine, but there's a problem. You should know that reason can't record audio in, so you'll have to use another program to do that. Check out reaper, it's a good, cheap, capable sequencer http://www.reaper.fm If you want to be able to record your vocals/guitar and use reason simotaniously (instead of recording then having to import everything in reason) you'll have to read up on rewire also. |

Thanks for that. I am a newbie to all of this, just starting out and I want to do some home recording on my Mac. I read up on Reaper, looks really cool. Also Rewire makes sense, one question though.. If I want to record vocals, guitars and then use a drum machine for drums, what is the best software solution I should go for? Do I actually need to use Reason? Can I do this all using Reaper? I take it Reaper supports MIDI devices such as a MIDI keyboard? Does Reaper have a drum machine ability? Thanks. D |

Reaper doesn't really come with a built in drum machine like reason, but since it supports all the plugin formats (vst for example) you can easily find a drum machine plugin, might even find some good ones for free. check out http://www.kvraudio.com it has a excellent plugin database, including good free plugins. You don't need to use reason really, if you're only interested in using reason for drums, it may be a bit overkill. Reason should be thought of as a "rack" of studio gear, and sounds. But if you already have reason, then it wouldnt hurt to use it just for drums, especially if you like it's ReDrum device. I can't really know if reaper will best suite your needs, everyone has a different perference, but I find it to be simple enough for beginners, but yet capable enough for professionals at the same time. There are some other sequencers out there that you may want to check out, although I'm not familar with many others. If you're new to music production software, I know all this can give you a headache lol, but just keep reading up based on your needs and I am sure you'll do fine. |

Thank a lot for your help and advice I appreciate it. Going to have a play with Reason and Reaper. Also been looking at Rewire to get the 2 talking to each other. Is it straight forward to install VST plugins into Reaper? Sorry this is slightly going off topic from Reason.. 1 basic question I would like to ask... if I purchase one of these M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB devices and want to record my guitar and vocals, just to confirm.. I can't do this with Reason standalone, I have to use Reaper to record and then use Rewire for the 2 programs to communicate. Sorry if I don't make sense! Thanks. D |

Yes just install your vst plugins into a folder on you computer, then in reaper's perferences (in the vst section under plugins) just add the folder you used. Reaper will scan the folder and detect your plugins automatically. Yes you are correct, you'll have to use reaper to record all your stuff, then use rewire to use reason reason alongside reaper. Also if you're set on using reaper there's some pretty cool themes available. Here's the site where you can get em. http://stash.reaper.fm/ |

Thanks again for the excellent advice. Going slightly off topic again.. lol.. I have been debating buying an audio interface for my Mac on it's own and I am now swaying towards using a multitrack based device with Reason 4.0 and my new USB audio interface. Can anyone recommend a good multitrack for this purpose? I have had a look on the net and there are quite a few to choose from! What I aim to achieve with this is to record a live band using the multitrack, bring the multitrack back home and import the recording into Reason to mix and play with the recordings. This sounds easy to achieve but unfortunately my expertise is zero so I appreciate any advice given. |
