| Now I have a friend, who does his instrumentals with reason, and I told him about my problem and that also I don't think I will be able to do much just with a mouse & a keyboard, and he told me that he did instrumentals only with a mouse and keyboard for 7 years (and the guy is a pro).... So, my question is: Are there any tutorials, witch learn you how to use reason WITHOUT any devices or things like that? Everywhere I look, they all bring a piano keyboard or something.... *sry 4 bad english grammar I just can't afford one Thnx |

I use Reason without a MIDI keyboard the most time. The most Reason tutorial don't require a MIDI keyboard. Using Reason with a MIDI Keyboard or Controller is just an option, not a necessity. So, using it just with mouse and computer keyboard is no "special case". Just read the Getting Started.pdf and watch some tutorials on youtube. |

^ The most well-known one of those is Bome's MIDI keyboard, I'm sure that there are others but that is the one most people use The only thing that you truly need a keyboard for would be messing around, possilby trying to find a melody that you like. Some people like recording Redrum with the keyboard (i.e. me and the cool dude on the reason ads), and the controller is only ever really used for playing live, it's not nearly as cleanly automated as it would be with the pencil or line tool if you get what I mean. And engineering, sound effects and all that stuff are pretty much all done with mouse.

I can't really play piano, so I usually dont use it for my songs. However, it is very useful for testing out sounds and coming up with a melody.

I'm very new to this as well mate and i have never owned a midi controller either though i have used one. i've been doing it all by mouse and keyboard and i havn't found it to be much of an inhibiter. Can you play guitar? i always work out my melodies on guitar first and then tab them out in reason and then get my tone/effects sorted out later so in a way it is a lot like jamming in a band anyway. But obviously eventually we are both going to have to get midi controllers because there is nothing quite like the control you get when you are jamming melodies and tones in reason with a midi keyboard.
