Default Newbie Help: Routing Audio Through Effects

Hi all.

I want to use Reason exclusively (for now) to route audio FROM my audio interface through Reason's effects (distortion, chorus).

Can this be done, or do I need to use Reason's onboard instruments? Also, if it's not too hard to explain, how would I do this?

Thanks to any and all for any help.

Best,
Daniel

In general, it's not possible to get any audio into Reason.
It's only possible to route audio into Reason with a special tool called "hammer" from Petertools (http://www.petertools.com/hammer/). The trick of this tool is to pose as rebirth338 and feed audio into the rebirth input device of reason. But even, if you use this, you cannot record the audio in Reason. So everytime you want to play back your song, the external audio source must be started in sync with reason. I think, it's a unsatisfying fumbling around.

Thanks for your answer. Sounds annoying So Ableton does it with no problems, but I don't know if it's the best tool for FX. For Windows, can you recommend any programs that might be made for this? It's for a electronic drum that has amazing sounds, but limited FX.

Thanks!

Ableton can use VSTs as you probably already know, so you don't have to use the built in FX. Personally I really like cakewalk's sonitus fx suite, it came with my sonar and I was very impressed with my mixes while just using those fx plugins.

But just to note, they're all plenty and plenty of free quality vst plugins for fx, you just have to know where to look.

KVR is a massive database of many plugins and you can search for tons of quality free ones there.

Default Sonitus and KVR

Thanks so much for your answer.

Yes, I knew that Ableton does VSTs, but it doesn't seem like the most comfortable interface for making FX racks. Maybe it is the best, but I want to check out other options. Ableton is overkill for what I need, and at the same time, has some problems with my EMU-0202... so I want to see if it's Ableton, hardware, or what.

I did not know about Sonitus and I also did not know that free VSTs can be good. I'll be checking that stuff out.

Thanks again for the help!

Daniel

before you buy anything, check out innuendo. it's great for effects and it supports vsts unlike reason.
