| Can someone (everyone) please tell me the advantages of having 4.0? I'm running 3.0 right now and I'm satisfied. I know there's thor, which I probably wouldn't use anyway. Two things that I would miss is my favs that I saved, and there's a ton of that. Another is the draw line. I use that a lot. Is there more sounds to choose from? Better sounds maybe? More user friendly? I don't know. I use Reason two ways. I use it in my studio. I record live bands, singles and so forth. Reason is used as add ons, strings, horns and I run my drum pads via midi through Reason. Another way, is to write songs on my own when I'm not recording others. I can compose, or add tracks to some of the recorded stuff. I'm pretty much old school with my music. I write country, rock, bluegrass, jazz, blues, orchestral, and whatever. Reason can do all of these styles. There is no other program like it that I know of. So I'm looking for some feedback as to the advantages and/or disadvantages of moving up to 4.0. Thanks, Joe |

The sequencer changes are awesome, I never used 3.0 but from the differences I saw, I'm not quite sure how I would have worked on 4.0. If 3.0 doesn't have sequencer clips (which I believe it doesn't?) that's enough of a reason for me to upgrade because it has saved A LOT of time and enhances creativity and sketching out ideas QUICKLY. Thor of course, is amazing unto itself, not to mention the very many modulation options it gives you and the awesome filters. The regroove mixer I've used a few times but in doing jazzy glitchy stuff it hasn't helped a whole lot. It's at least interesting to play with and get some nice timing adjustments. There's probably other stuff I've overlooked but man, it's pretty awesome as a whole lol

Ya thinking on this more, Thor has completely and totally replaced subtractor (for me, and many others). It just does more and sounds better. ALSO the arpeggiator is pretty sweet, not only because it arps but you can also use it to trigger anything really which results in interesting effects. Not to mention time signature automation and even more importantly tempo automation. If cost is not an issue, not upgrading is just silly

Thanks guys for your valuable input. And of course, I shouldn't place judgement before the trial as far as thor is concerned. But I seldom use subtractor because I'm not really in to synth style music. I strive for realistic type sounds when using Reason. I'm very old school. But y'all (yes I'm Southern) have given me what I need to know. And for that, I thank both of you. Joe |

as someone who also upgraded to 4.0, the main reason i chose to was that you could change tempos and time signatures during the same song. i hated that you couldn't do that in 3.0 and the music i make requires the ability to change or a lot of effort keeping track of where i am. so, for me, that was worth the upgrade. as for thor, i wasn't impressed with the demos i saw. i thougth that would change once i actually used it. i do admit that it has neat pre-sets and amazing possibilities, but whether it's the learning curve (and i'm a pretty smart guy) or i just haven't gotten "the secret" (and i'm not sure there is one) -- i just think it's shite. again, it's the possibilities -- while there are so many options, etc. i find that all the method by which you do the programming and routing is a bit ridiculous. the delay and chorus on it suck. and for the most part, every sound ends up tinged with the same "sound feel" which is, of course, the natural outcome of using any synth -- it will always sound like itself -- but i don't like it. it sounds like everything comes from the 80s done the wrong way. i also don't think it can be processed further as well as the other synths -- adding reverb or delay is no fun. finally, in many ways it's unconvincing -- the "voices" are at best weak imitations of a dying cat and the "percussion" always sounds limp and lame. whoa -- got a little carried away there. anyway, i highly recommend 4.0 for tempo/time changes, the arp-8 which is really amazing, and there are new presets (i don't use them but if you do, you'll enjoy). |

I like Thor, you can make some pretty epic leads, and I could play with it's routing for hours.

Thanks again to those who posted, very much appreciated. Money is not the major issue, but it will take me many hours to reset my favs folder. And I really will miss the line tool. But, there is always some advantages and disadvantages when change is the order. Joe |
