I put the selector thing (don't know what else to call it) at the beginning of a measure. I have a pattern I have made in redrum. I hit play (to hear it with one of my other sounds) and it starts in the middle of the pattern. what am i doing wrong?

Huh? I think I may understand you correctly but I dunno know...

Click on the redrum's sequencer track, make sure you're "L" and "R" markers are on the correct position (your drum beat will be placed between them) and then select your pattern and right click the redrum and press "copy pattern to track". Now click "enable pattern" off so that it doesnt play over the pattern copied to the sequencer.
