ive been searchin the forums on how to record the step sequence pattern and all ive come up with is it cannot be recorderd, i can only start and stop by pressing run...what good does that do me?
even when i try to use the keyboard it records the first note....so why do we have it? theres no way i can play the keyboard fast enough to duplicate what ive done in the sequencer

am i an idiot doing this wrong or am i correct in saying that the step sequence is of no use to me?

The step sequencer can be used as a source of modulation which makes it pretty damn sweet. As far as using it actually for the purpose of sequencing, I think it's pretty useless as well.

Meh it's good for runs and stuff and as ducat said modulation, but... I rarely use it. Guess Reason added an unneccesary feature while trying to make thor as epic as possible.
